East Bridgewater, Massachusetts, is a small town with about 20,000 people located in Plymouth County. Europeans first settled the area around the year 1630 and died down soon after that due to Indian raids. The original years were marked by difficulties between natives and settlers, including one tragic incident in which three children from East Bridgewater were killed during an Indian attack before their father could rescue them. He heard them scream from afar as he was chopping wood outside the settlement's fence. Only one settler had been killed in these early years up until King Philip's War broke out in 1675-1676, which saw more than half of East Bridgewater getting burned down. Unfortunately, the settlement also had a couple of epidemics during those years, destroying homes and killing people. After that war ended in the defeat of the Indians, East Bridgewater began to flourish as a town once more. Much of what we could see around East Bridgewater today is due to the rebuilding done after King Philip's War which reduced the number of homes from roughly 120 to 80. Although it wasn't always a peaceful existence – there was a notable incident in 1746 where colonists got attacked while returning home. Hence, they opened fire at them instead with muskets which had no effect despite heavy return fire. The next day they tried again, but this time they were prepared, so they managed to kill some of the attackers; for this reason, the colonists were left alone after that. The first church was built around 1720 but was burned down in 1743 under unclear circumstances. There are many sites around East Bridgewater today. You can tour and learn about its fascinating history – including Fort Phoenix, built to defend Plymouth Colony from another possible Indian attack during King George's War. You can also stop by Peck Farm, where there is a homestead museum with some migrant workers who will give you an idea of what it was like to live at such a time, even if they don't speak too much English. And finally, if you want to learn more about the town's early days, visit nearby Plimoth Plantation, where they have plenty of exhibits showing you what life was like back in the 17th century.
