The small town of Randolph is located in Norfolk County, Massachusetts. At the 2010 census, 32,158 people lived here. In January of 2010, they adopted a new kind of government where there's an elected council and manager instead of everyone getting together to make decisions at meetings.
The city that was once known for its charming community feel has been taken over by politics with the switch from town meetings to having a representative vote on things like taxes or road repairs.
The town of Randolph was one of the country's leading boot producers during the 19th century. However, this industry declined and has largely been replaced by service-based industries in recent years.
History of RandolphCochaticquom is one of the oldest towns in Massachusetts. It has its own unique and interesting story that differs from surrounding areas. The town was named after an important figure, Peyton Randolph, who served as a president for congress during revolutionary times.
The former home of many large shoe companies, Randolph is where styles like the "Randies" were made exclusively. At its incorporation in 1793, local farmers manufactured shoes and boots to supplement their family incomes from maintenance farming.
In the next half-century, this sideline had become Randolph's major industry. By 1850 it was one of America's leading boot producers and sent boots as far away as California and Australia. It attracted lots of workers who were willing to become part of the booming industry of shoemaking.
As a result of the decline in shoe manufacturing at the beginning of the 20th century, Randolph's economic focus changed from boots and shoes to light manufacturing as well as service industries. Over the course of many decades, Randolph has become a prime location for families who work in metropolitan areas such as Boston but still wish to call it home.
The Jewish community in Randolph grew significantly during the 1960s. They went from having about 15-20 families living in the town to 7,000 members by 1970 and 9,000 around 1980 which made it one of the largest such communities south of Boston at that time.
Over the years, Randolph grew to have many amenities and institutions of interest. The population reached a peak during this time between 6-8 thousand people who were largely Jewish with access to two separate synagogues for their services. However, in 1992 things began shifting as more individuals moved away from what was once recognized as one great community.
A guidance counselor at Randolph High School was the inspiration behind "smoke-out day", a nationally observed event that aims to lower smoking rates among teens. The counselor noticed that he could send all of his students to college if he had a nickel for every cigarette butt found on campus grounds. Thus, they decided it would be best to have an entire school-wide smoke break where they could throw out their cigarettes together.
This led to a movement by the Randolph High School class of 1970, along with support from local Rotary Clubs and students at Randolph HS, to encourage smokers to give up smoking for an entire day. This effort was so successful that it went national in 1976.
