It has an elected Select Board that chooses a Town Administrator to keep the day-to-day operations running smoothly. Meanwhile, the Open Town Meeting acts as the legislative branch of government.
The Town of Easton, located 30 minutes outside Boston, is a thriving community with an annual population growth rate. Open Town Meeting governs it, and the executive branch consists of five elected members serving three-year terms who hire a full-time town administrator to oversee daily operations. The administrator oversees day-to-day operations within the government which they hire every year or two years depending on what works best for them financially speaking. They also make sure it still serves up its purpose effectively. Though not necessarily efficiently nor perfectly reliably if need be too that much, but when needed, then so be it regardless, no matter how complicated things may seem. Easton’s History Early Easton In the 1970s, Easton celebrated its 250th anniversary and commemorated its town's history. Unfortunately, most of it was unknown to people outside the community; however, recently, this has been changing for the better with national recognition. Easton is rich with Native American history, and evidence can be found throughout the town. Several campsites used by the Wampanoags remain today, mainly spread along streams where they could hunt for food. Arrowheads and other artifacts have been frequently found near Stonehill College, which has led to the circulation of many legends about the place. After King Philip's War ended in 1676, Easton experienced its first English settlers sometime after it finished. In 1668 a land company acquired all of Easton for 100 pounds as part of what is now called Taunton North Purchase. This was roughly two pounds per square mile; however, it wasn't until 1694 when some people settled down there more permanently. In the beginning, settlers wanted to take advantage of Taunton's water power and access to bog iron. However, traveling long distances for church meetings was difficult, so they decided that moving together would be best. Easton residents are known to be tight-fisted with money. One town meeting in the 1740s voted that it was better for them to pay a fine. For them, they would save more by not having schools than paying fines and hiring teachers. In addition, Easton has faced several court actions, forcing them into improving their roads under penalty of law enforcement action if necessary. Easton in the 19th century Oliver Ames, the son of John Ames, made some of America's earliest iron shovels. He set up a successful business that would grow to become the largest industry by the century’s end. The Ames family's contributions to North Easton allowed it to grow and develop into a town. Unfortunately, the different areas of the cities also contributed, splitting them up into factions that only recently think of themselves as one town. The Ames Shovel and Tool Company built their stone shops in 1852 after a disastrous fire forced them to. This began North Easton's significant era of development as the company created many additions. This includes houses on Elm Street that are still standing today and deemed part of a living museum for visitors. Easton in the 20th centuryIn addition to the growth of South Easton, North Easton grew too. It was home to the primary industry such as the Ross Heel Company and J. O Dean Mill. Among others, who made parts for Morse automobiles that were still in existence today at one point during this period. The earliest carbonated beverages were manufactured in South Easton at the original location of Simpson Spring Company. Mr. Frederick A Howard began bottling spring water for commercial use back in 1878. But, it wasn't until two years later that he started manufacturing quality soda drinks on-site as well. The source to this day is still used and has never gone dry! Historical Preservation of Easton Easton's dedication to environmental conservation is as evident as you can see that the town has a program in place to match Community Preservation Act funds. In addition, they recently bought property dedicated to open space. The Ames family shaped not only the Town’s economy but also its geography and architecture. The town has buildings owned or designed by members of the large extended family. Over 160 homes were built for their workers between 1803-1870 along Main Street, which is now called Olde Spaulding Avenue. In the late 19th century, a family created an incredible legacy by donating several landmark buildings to their town. It was noteworthy not only for its kindness but also for its architectural significance. The famous architect H.H. Richardson designed Oakes Ames Memorial Hall. He also designed the library and railroad station in Old Colony Village which still stands today as landmarks of architecture in New England townships.
