History of Stoughton Settled in 1713 and officially incorporated as a town from the southwestern portion of Dorchester, Stoughton was named after William Stoughton who served on colonial courts. Stoughton’s history dates back to before its official founding when it separated from what is now Canton and Sharon during colonial times. In 1874, the Stoughton Public Library was established. The oldest choral society in the United States is located in Stoughton and founded as "The Old Musical Society" in 1786 it has now been renamed to its current title: "Old Stonce Musical Society." On the occasion of its bicentennial, this musical society performed a series of concerts and events. In 1893 it distinguished itself by performing several for an audience of thousands at Chicago's World Columbian Exposition in Chicago heard before 1986 when celebrating their 200th year they hosted multiple shows and celebrations. The Stoughton train station was built in 1888 and is the only one to house a clock tower. It’s unique because it used stones from Myron Gilbert's quarry on West Street, who owned land all over town. Despite being listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974, receiving over $1 million to restore it back to its original luster for a 100th anniversary celebration and having millions of passengers travel through within the first year after reopening. The MBTA closed down permanently due to lack of use in 2009. The building still stands but remains closed to the public as of 2015. In 2015, members at Town Meeting voted in favor of purchasing the train station from the state. Plans are being developed by The Community Preservation Committee on how they will use this property now that it is theirs. Government in Stoughton The town of Stoughton is governed by a selectmen-manager plan with a representative town meeting. Each year, the Annual Town Meeting convenes in May and is chaired by Adam Dawkins who currently holds that position. The small New England township of Stoughton has been operating under this structure as one part government official and another part citizenry since its founding almost three hundred years ago. In 2017, it was decided at their annual meeting to put forth an open ballot proposal for switching over to the mayor system so they can have more direct control over how things are run within the municipality. However, any changes would need approval from the state legislature before anything could be passed into effect. Education in Stoughton Students can attend one of seven public schools in Stoughton. Stoughton Public Schools operates six elementary schools, a single middle school, and a high school within the town borders for local students to go to between pre-kindergarten through twelfth grade. The new high school was complete and ready for 2019-2020. The old one, demolished to make way for the athletic fields at its site, had a wall erected in front of it using parts from the original building as well. On Tuesday, November 17th, 2015 the Board of Selectmen and Stoughton School Committee unanimously voted to endorse a building project. Annual Events in Stoughton Every year on the 4th of July, Stoughton has an annual parade. Other attractions include local drama groups, summertime outdoor concerts, and a fireworks display at the high school.
